Launched in 1979, Tumble Tots, the brainchild of Bill Cosgrave, an Olympic gymnastics coach, was the UK’s first structured physical play programme for children from 6 months to 7 years.
Tumble Tots allows children the opportunity to participate in fun physical play in a safe and caring environment using specially designed colourful equipment. The programme aims to help children develop skills for life and contributes towards their growth into confident, healthy adults.
Tumble Tots sessions are structured to assist in the development of physical skills such as agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination. In addition social skills are developed as they’re encouraged to listen, interact with each other, take turns and share their experiences. Action songs and rhymes are used which help with language development.
During the most formative years from birth to five, physical activity is critical to help maintain a healthy weight and strengthen muscles and heart. Physical activity greatly improves the development of the brain leading to strong foundations for reading, writing and basic co-ordination to enhance confident learning ahead.
Since 1979, Tumble Tots has encouraged over a million children to reach their mental and physical potential in more than five hundred centres around the world.
There are five different Tumble Tots classes which are structured according to the different age groups and the children’s’ abilities. Comprehensive training is provided to all staff. Each class has its own programme structure reflecting the children’s physical changes, emotional behaviour and expectations. During the various sessions, children tackle physical tasks on the activity circuits made up of specifically-designed, colourful and safe Tumble Tots equipment. The children are proud to wear their special Tumble Tots t-shirts which helps give a sense of belonging.

Tumble Tots will this spring be offering its leading physical development programme full of activities aimed at developing the physical skills of agility, balance, co-ordination and climbing, through the use of brightly coloured Tumble Tots equipment.
The new term will be starting on Thursday 23 April. The term will include 10 classes.

Tumble Tots offers programmes to five different age groups
Gymbabes – From 6 months to walking
The Gymbabes session is a wonderful introduction to the Tumble Tots programme. Babies are given the opportunity to explore at their own pace in a gentle environment, giving them time to build their confidence with the equipment, staff and setting. The session helps babies to make sense of the world around them as they feel textures, listen and join in the fun through exploratory play. Staff work directly with parents suggesting different activities based on the developmental stage of their baby. It aims to enhance babies’ social, intellectual and physical skills during their early years.

Tumble Tots Level 1 – Walking to 2 years
Once the children are walking confidently, they progress to the first level of Tumble Tots. In this session, children who are bundles of energy go straight on to the equipment which is laid out as a circuit. Again, learning at their own pace, the children can repeat an activity on the equipment as often as they like. Repetition and successful completion of the task helps build their confidence. As children’s’ energy levels at this age go up and down, co-ordination activities are introduced five minutes into the session offering a more sedentary activity until they are recharged and ready to go on to the equipment again. Staff work with parents to suggest activities to suit the skill level of their child.
At this stage body identification rhymes and action songs are used to assist in language development.
Tumble Tots Level 2 – From 2 to 3 years
This session begins with a circle time that encourages the children to talk in a group environment and warm up using fun action songs. Movement is based around four activity stations: agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination. With higher pieces of equipment and a more challenging layout, children with parental assistance work their way round the stations concentrating on the specific physical activities. The members of staff on each station again ensure the activities are tailored to suit the specific skill level of the child. The children are now more able to understand and interact with each other so trains are used to move between the different activity stations which encourages development of their listening, language and social skills.
Tumble Tots Level 3 – From 3 to 4 years
By the time they are three, children are ready to engage in physical activity challenges on their own. To help with the transition of no longer having their parental guardian with them during the class, the format of the session is the same as the 2 – 3s. By achieving tasks on their own and with encouragement and guidance from the staff, you will see the children really growing confidently preparing for their school years ahead.

Gymbobs – From 4 to 7 years
The Gymbobs class is designed to complement the teaching of physical education in schools. Gymbobs members are really challenged as the climbing and balancing activities are combined to form one huge station. Having developed good movement memory and a greater understanding of their general body management, we challenge them more in terms of equipment use and help them to perfect the skills that they are learning. The children are also introduced to the concept of team work through relay races and co-ordination activities as they concentrate on further developing hand, eye and foot control.
By the time they graduated from Tumble Tots and Gymbobs they would have formed an invaluable foundation which will give them a head-start in life.
